There may have been a time when preservation was about saving an old building here and there, but those days are gone. Preservation is the business of saving communities and the values they embody.

March Guest Speaker : Fielder Harris and Chinsegut Hill

The HHPS is please to welcome Chinsegut docent, researcher, and podcaster Natalie Kahler. She will be sharing with us the remarkable story of Fielder Harris. Chinsegut owner Raymond Robins considered Fielder his primary mentor in farming and much of the estate's success is owed to Fielder. His marriage to Precious Ann Washington connected Fielder with a family that still resides in Hernando County today. Thanks to many Robins' family letters and photos, we ae able to learn a lot about this fascinating man.

Ode to the Volunteer

Oh Humble volunteer, where can you be,

Selling hot dogs in the shade of a tree?

Perhaps attending a lecture at City Hall,

How can you possibly juggle it all?

There were rumors that you were seen at the Raid,

Handing out leaflets in the afternoon shade.

Baking cookies, or driving a tram,

Giving home tours, Looking 1800’s glam.

Setting up tables, as well as large tents,

Wrestling with brochures, not making a cent.

Why do you do it, why work so hard?

Is it for a framed certificate or ‘thank you” card?

Why teach history to those who don’t care?

It’s something that drives you to make them aware.

It’s not about money or fame or being smart,

It’s about reaching someone straight from you heart.

So when you see all over town,

Teaching & working, never being down,

We’ll point and say, “honey look over there,”

There goes Hernando’s Best Volunteer.
